Liberty

The price of liberty, so very great,
How well those patriots knew.
For them it was "Liberty or death,"
And they they would see it through.
In face of prison, danger, even death,
They stood for what was right.
"In God we trust," their battle cry,
And He would win the fight.

The blessing of liberty, how very great,
To us they have been given.
This land by God so greatly blest
With mercies straight from heaven.
Let us cherish, then, these gifts,
For they are ours by birth.
And let us never then forget
How much our liberty is worth.

The demands of liberty, how very great,
Oh do not fail to see
That the demands those patriots faced
Are just as real for you and me.
They fought and died to win for us
This blessed victory.
Can we do less to keep it now,
And so preserve our liberty?

Spiritual liberty, how very great,
Is granted then to you and me.
For in Christ Jesus we shall know
Our sins are forgiven, our souls set free.
Why then be bound by chains of sin
When you can know this liberty?
For whom the Son shall then set free
That soul shall have a true liberty.
- William F. Sherbert.
